Gary Beydler was born in Los Angeles, California in 1944 and attended the UC Irvine MFA program in the early 1970s. Throughout his career, Beydler authored poetic meditations on Los Angeles and the surrounding landscape. In concert with the contemporary interest in the cinematic apparatus, Beydler's documents of the desert, highway, and sea also function as self-portraits and regimented dissections of cinematic production.
In May of 1977, David E. James published an article on four of Beydler's films in NEW Magazine, a publication of Beyond Baroque in Venice, CA. Beginning in 2005, the publication of David James' The Most Typical Avant-Garde as well as the preservation and exhibition of films including Venice Pier encouraged renewed interest in Beydler's work. Gary Beydler passed away in Mission Viejo, California in 2010.
