Joseph Francis Charles Rock (1884–1962) was an Austrian-American explorer, botanist, and anthropologist who traveled extensively through Tibet (西藏) and the Chinese provinces of Yunnan (云南), Gansu (甘肃), and Sichuan (四川), residing in the region for over 25 years before leaving China in 1949. In addition to his botanical expeditions, Rock authored a two-volume cultural history of the Nakhi (纳西) people of Southwest China and produced numerous studies on the texts and ritual ceremonies of the Dongba tradition.
