After years of studying drama during the war, she began acting in 1973 in the film "To the Field of Sedge" (Người về đồng cói, d. Bạch Diệp). She then appeared in several other films: "Song of the Battle" (Bài ca ra trận, d. Trần Đắc, 1973-1975); "Plan Three Roses" (Phương án ba bông hồng, d. Văn Hòa, 1981); "The One Who Can't Speak Yet" (Người chưa biết nói, d. Bạch Diệp); and "The Forgotten Proposal" (Bản đề án bị bỏ quên, d. Nông Ích Đạt). Thanh Loan landed her most well known role, the undercover ranger Huyền Trang (disguised as a Buddhist nun), in the TV series "Saigon Rangers" (Biệt động Sài Gòn, d. Long Vân, 1982-1986).
