Berta Saldaña trained as a journalist and, drawing on this experience, began working as a filmmaker on the newsreel Nuevo Perú (1970-1980) during the governments of Velasco Alvarado and Morales Bermúdez. During the Belaúnde Terry administration, she continued producing the newsreel Andino (until 1983). Through this work, Berta learned the intricacies of filmmaking and applied this language to informing the public. In 1974, she founded Bersa Films with Gregorio Li Rosi to strengthen her short film production under the framework of Film Law 19327. The film footage from some of her audiovisual work has been cleaned and identified and is currently held at the PUCP Film Archive.
