History Makers: The Story of the 2010 AFC Women's Asian Cup Winners
The Matildas made history by winning the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in 2010, becoming the first Australian senior national team to win an Asian Football Confederation title. The landmark victory in Chengdu, China, in front of just 1,200 fans at Chengdu Sports Centre, was a watershed moment for women’s football in Australia. With an average age of 22, many of the team were participating in their first international tournament. Underdogs at the time, this team would go on to cultivate many of the household names fans celebrate today.
